skin begins
affairs ended by mouths
fingertips like platoons
marching across my skin
I am mounds and mountains
I am rivers and springs
you worked so hard to conquer
then let lie fallow
now scarred and dimpled
pocked and plagued
blankets and bodies
committed to fire
so that no more will die
my white flag replaced
by yours of victory
then
the black of retreat
not of cowardice or threat
but neglect and disinterest
weeds sprout and twist and twine
ropes replace the horizontal
and we all must climb
over walls of the decayed and discarded
trying not to trip
in the groves left by your wagon wheels
leading back to the North
